Things to do in Albany and the Surrounding Area

Albany is a fascinating place and perfect for a family holiday as there's something to do for everyone. Apart from lazing around on the beach and building sandcastles, there are also plenty of attractions to enjoy in Albany and the surrounding area.

The area itself is rich in natural beauty, with the majestic Stirling Ranges and the Mount Barker wine region to the north, the dramatic Southern Ocean coastline and many interesting small rural towns such as Denmark. Albany itself is set on the beautiful King George Sound and Princess Royal Harbour, with beautiful sandy beaches and sheltered coves.

Whale and dolphin spotting from the coastal cliffs is an absorbing seasonal pastime, and for those who like a spot of fishing, you can fish from the rocks and beaches for Salmon, Herring, Mulloway and King George Whiting, and from boats for Red Snapper and a host of other fish.

There's also plenty of historical interest in Albany, which is the oldest town on the west coast and the first ever established settlement of the state. Beginning as a military outpost, Albany is the largest city in the southern parts and lies on one of the largest natural harbours in the world - King George Sound. Albany has the richest history of any city in the state due to its military past and the large scale whaling operations that were established here. This is reflected by the hundreds of historical landmarks, including the Old Jail, Residency Museum, Princess Royal fortress and old whaling station.
