Things to do in Kalgoorlie and the Surrounding Area

Kalgoorlie is well worth a 3 or 4 day stay to explore all its places of interest and experience its unique character. Tourist attractions have really taken off over the past few years and some of the best things to do and places to visit are these:

Hannans North Tourist Mine - A must for everyone. Learn about the history of gold mining, watch a gold pour demonstration, go underground, see lots of surface displays and pan for gold. The Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame opens October 2001.

Museum of the Goldfields - A fascinating collection of exhibits and hands-on activities; in the underground vault see gold jewellery, the first 400oz gold bar minted in Kalgoorlie, coins and a dazzling collection of nuggets.

Outdoors is a sandalwood camp, a miner's cottage and other historical attractions. Live the history, wander through buildings such as Claude de Bernale's jarrah lined offices and the first West Australian Bank.

The Golden Mile Super Pit Lookout - The world's biggest single open cut mine operates 24 hours a day and has daily blasts which can be seen from the viewing platform. The huge lorries look like toys as they travel the perimeters of the massive Super Pit, which is currently 280m deep, 4km long and 1.5 km wide. During the next decade it will go to 600m depth.

Bush Two-Up - Watch the betting action at the 2 Up ring. This game is the only legal Bush 2 Up in Australia. Open each day from 5pm.

Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Centre - The 'Doctor' provides an essential service to many Australians. See firsthand how the service operates with a tour, talk and video.

Brothel Tour of Langtrees - In the heart of the red light district in Kalgoorlie, this entertainment complex is one of the latest and most infamous renovations to take place in Kalgoorlie. Experience day tours of the rooms, facilities, museum and heritage gallery; enjoy a meal at the licensed restaurant. Not everyone's cup of tea, but definitely part of the character of Kalgoorlie.

The Loopline Railway - Tour the surrounds of the Golden Mile in the old train which once carried hundreds of miners to work each day.

Wildflowers - July to October - At the moment Kalgoorlie-Boulder is gearing up for spring - the wildflower season - our busiest time of the year. Guided tours of wildflower areas are available. Contact the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Tourist Centre for wildflower conditions and tour availability.
Maps and wildflower books are available from the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Tourist Centre. Other guides such as the CALM newspaper, 'The Goldfields - a Land of Surprises' are available through the Tourist Centre.

Goldfields War Museum - See a fascinating range of war memorabilia and an outdoor display of armoured vehicles.

Cornwall Hotel - This beautifully restored old pub has many stories of the early days such as the race riots and gold stealing.

Tours - there are plenty of tours to choose from, such as:

Goldrush Tours - Goldrush can show you the best of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Coolgardie and the Northern Goldfields through a varied program of half day and full day tours, with daily pickups from Prospector Holiday Park. Our staff can help you choose and make bookings for you.

There are also tour opportunities to go prospecting for gold and make trips into the outback. The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Tourist Centre in the centre of town has plenty of information to assist you.
